The First-Time Manager in Asia
by BH Tan, Singapore

Becoming a first-time manager is one of the most challenging experiences in a person's career. It is both a time of great excitement as well as uncertainty and insecurity. The good news is that you have been promoted. The bad news is that you will probably be left to sink or swim.  First-time managers who succeed are able to make profound adjustments and adapt themselves quickly. By developing new competencies, they start to become value creators to their teams and companies. But those who aren't able to make the critical shifts will struggle.
With Asia rising, more Asian managers are reaching the upper rungs of management. There are also more younger Western managers who will be working alongside them. These self-confident Asian managers and their curious and enlightened Western counterparts know that it s no longer tenable to apply Western management practices without adaptation.

Global Leadership: The Next Generation
by Maya Hu-ChanSan Diego, CA USA

Global Leadership: The Next Generation systematically identifies what tomorrow's leaders will need to know, do and believe in order to successfully lead the global enterprise of the future.  Drawing on the results of an extraordinary 2-year Accenture study of emerging business leaders, this book shows why the skills of today's global leaders won't be enough--and why tomorrow's leaders won't resemble today's. Goldsmith and his co-authors first identify five new "factors of leadership" and their implications: global thinking, appreciation of diversity, technological savvy, a willingness to partner and an openness to sharing leadership. They explain what it will mean to lead in an era where intellectual capital is the dominant source of value; how to lead people whose backgrounds and values may be radically dissimilar from yours; and why achieving personal self-mastery is now a fundamental prerequisite for leading others.

Executive Coaching for Results:
The Definitive Guide to Developing Organizational Leaders

by Brian Underhill, San Jose, CA USA

The field of executive coaching is growing at an astonishing rate. Corporations are increasingly turning to coaching as an intervention, as it offers leaders and managers both on-the-job learning and built-in follow-up. Human resource and leadership development practitioners must wade through a wilderness of conflicting information about when to use coaching, how to do it well, and how to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and success of any coaching intervention. "Executive Coaching for Results" helps this critical leadership development technique come of age. This is not a how-to-coach book - there are already plenty of those - but rather a comprehensive guide on how to strategically use coaching to maximize development of talent and link the impact of coaching to bottom-line results. Underhill, McAnally, and Koriath draw on their rigorous original research with Fortune 1000 and Global 500 companies such as Dell, Sony, Johnson & Johnson, Disney, Unilever, Wal- Mart, and many others to cover topics like coaching as part of an overall leadership development strategy; typical activities and instruments used during coaching; costs of coaching; development of an internal coaching program; selection of the right coach for the job; the ROI of coaching; following up after coaching; and much more. Offering practical learning, best practices, and illuminating case studies, this is the first definitive guide to the effective use of executive coaching in the corporate environment.

What experienced executive coaches do to fine-tune their coaching skills.
by Jeffrey Cohen, New York

Like many experienced coaches, I've tried to continually update and fine tune my skill set.  I believe that if I continually improved, my clients would develop faster and do better.
As luck would have it, I was asked to make a presentation at ASTD NY. Talking about myself seemed boring, so I contacted 70 experienced coaches through LinkedIn and asked them:
"What are you doing to fine tune your coaching skills."
I expected a 10 percent response and was pleasantly surprised when 39 participated. On average, they said they are carrying out five developmental activities, many of them unique. Most of the respondents took my question to another unexpected level. That is, a personal level discussing what they value. I wonder whether this is an anomaly of this group or a characteristic of experienced coaches, in general.  After reading the report, I'd be interested in your take.  What the first thing that would come to mind if asked the same question? Please email me your thoughts.
