Coaching Supervision
Great article, Brian - I'll keep it handy when coaches want to know about this trend. As a coach who was in that coaching supervisor training session sponsored by CoachSource, I am now a converted skeptic. A year or two ago, I'd heard that ICF was toying with coaching supervision, and trying to decide what role it might have for their members. They had convened a panel of experts on the topic, and I had seen their recommendations and was outraged! How dare they consider imposing one more money-making scheme on me and my fellow coaches! I let it rest, and later watched Sam McGill speak at a conference. I became slightly interested and more and more curious. But when I actually stepped in the door and participated in the training with Damian to become a supervisor while also being a supervisee, I realized it was exactly what I needed - and that all coaches need. The ability to discuss dilemmas as a supervisee - ethical and emotional - in a confidential supportive environment with someone who does this work - was freeing. I felt the quandaries I had with some clients lifting. My gremlins quieted. My confidence increased, and my ability to work with those clients (and all clients) has improved in a way it never had with more training or mentor coaching. I know I'm an even better coach for my clients. I believe Coaching Supervision is the next logical step for coaches. Thanks for all you and CoachSource does to stay on top of the future.
